What Should Be In A Runner’s Diet

Proper nutrition is important among runners for two reasons. One is to supplement their energy to achieve power performance. And two is to meet their nutritional needs. However, runner’s diet and proper nutrition are two of the most overlooked aspects of running that many runners, novices most especially, feel powerless and fatigued every time they run. When running, runners burn calories, or energy, and to be able to fuel their running, they need to replace the lost calories adequately. Taking the following, in the right amount and at the right time, will do the job.

Carbohydrates
A normal diet should consist of 40% carbohydrates. For runners, however, the number should be anywhere from 60 to 65%, the reason being, carbohydrates are a good source of energy. Carbohydrates are converted into glucose and are then stored as glycogen. When running, the muscles use the stored glycogen to keep them energized. Sodas and candies provide carbohydrates, only theirs is the so-called simple carbohydrates or those that give energy for a short period of time. What the runners need are complex carbohydrates because these produce energy for long-term use. They can come from pastas, rice, breads, potatoes, and grains. Runners are recommended to take at least three grams of carbohydrates for every pound of body weight everyday. So a 120-pound runner should have 360 grams of carbohydrates daily.

Fats
Fats should make up 20 to 25% of the diet. Runners should take their fat requirements mostly from mono-unsaturated fats, or those that are liquid in form, as they are believed to meet sports nutritional needs effectively. Natural oils are good sources of mono-unsaturated fats. Foods with saturated and poly-unsaturated fats, such as red meats, butter, and margarine, are also good, but they should be taken in very minimal amounts. Foods with omega-3, an essential fat, should be also included in the runner’s diet.

Protein
To improve muscle stamina, runners are recommended to take .5 to .75 gram of protein for every pound of body weight daily. Proteins are not only a good source of energy, they also help in muscle growth and repair of broken muscles. Protein, which should be 15 to 20% of a runner’s diet, can be acquired from nuts, eggs, fish, beans, grains, and low-fat dairy products.

Water
Runners sweat a lot when running, a normal response to the muscles’ rigorous workout. But in order to prevent dehydration, weakness, and, in more serious cases, heat stroke while running, runners need to constantly replenish the lost amount of fluid. The problem usually is that runners replenish only half of the amount. To be adequately hydrated, they need to drink water before, during, and after running. And whether thirsty or not, they need to continuously hydrate themselves throughout the day.

Vitamins and Minerals
Recent studies pointed out that a runner’s diet should have the vitamins A, C, and E. All three have antioxidant properties that can rid of free radicals. Calcium, which strengthens bones and prevents osteoporosis, and iron, which helps in the delivery of oxygen to all parts of the body, should also be included in the diet. Although most of these vitamins and minerals are obtained from supplements, foods are still the recommended source.

Tips For Long Distance Running

Are you shooting for your first long distance running event? For some long-time runners, training for such an event—5 kilometer, 10 kilometer, half marathon, or marathon—is not so much of a problem. For first-time distance runners, however, training is quite laborious and boring. If you are currently undergoing training, the following tips can help you get by and prepare you for an experience as exciting as long distance running:

1. Take some rest days between the training. Doing so will give your body ample time to recover energy and reestablish muscle stamina. Some runners have a week or two of rest in between days of hard workouts. For relatively easy workouts, they schedule at least one day-off.

2. Mind your pace. Running long-distance is less about running fast, but is more about covering as many miles as you can. To be able to do this, you need to conserve your energy and run slow during the first few miles. Change your pace as you progress and approach the finish line.

3. Work on improving your speed. Allot two to three days of fast running per week.  There will be times, however, that your body won’t feel like working at a faster speed. Don’t push, as your body is trying to recover energy.

4. Increase your mileage. Successful distance runners increase their mileage at a gradual pace. Some of them add two to three miles after every week of training, while others have an easier approach, only adding a few more strides at the end of every run. But because your body works differently, you can design or look for a training plan that can help you increase your mileage at a proper intensity.

5. Put some diversity. To take the monotony out of your training, make sure to run different routes from time to time, run at different paces in a single session, and run at different paces on given days. The thing is, because running is most likely the same each day, you need to make it a little more exciting, something you always want to look forward to.

6. Have a running partner at certain points of your run. It’s okay to run solo, some runners even prefer it, but without someone to talk to the entire run, training gets impossibly boring. Try to catch up with someone, or agree to meet with a fellow runner halfway through the run. Of course, you have to be willing to change your pace to encourage small talks.

7. Listen to music. Long distance running is a mental activity as much as it is a physical challenge, so you need to get motivated and inspired to keep your body moving. Music does it well by keeping your mind off the physical discomforts of running and relaxing your mental state. During a run, bring an mp3 player with you and load it up with inspirational or your favorite music. Make sure your player has enough battery life to last the entire run.

8. Bring energy foods with you. Not only will they pump up your energy level, they also will give you something else to do other than running. It is also wise to have water or energy drink to keep you hydrated during your training for long distance running.

Tips for Running: A Guide for Beginners

Have you decided running regularly as a form of practical workout for your weight loss or physical training activity? You are on the right track. Running is truly a good and practical activity that could provide your body with an ideal cardiovascular or aerobic exercise. Running could make you sweat profusely, a sign that your body is metabolizing faster and burning up excessive stored fats. But you should not just run. You have to do it right and do it safely. If you are beginner, here are several useful tips to serve as your guide.

First tip: It is the right time to start running. Running and all other physical exercises are good for your body whatever your age is. Regular exercises could provide ideal benefits: you would have more energy; the chances of developing a heart ailment would be decreased; you could sleep better and get more relaxation; and you would be able to lose weight. It would never be too late to start running.

Second tip: Consult your doctor. Prior to starting running and other exercise programs, it would be appropriate to drop by your doctor’s clinic. Try to do so more especially if you are suffering from heart problems, obesity, breathing problems, and chronic fatigue. Your doctor could advise you on how to get proper pacing and could guide you on how long you should keep running per session. It is not safe to overdo running.

Third tip: Begin with a simple running or walking program. It is not advisable to start on a high level. Humbly start at low-levels. You may run or walk shorter distances when beginning the running program. You may also opt to run at least once a week initially. As you go on, you could slowly increase the distance, the duration, and the weekly frequency. Notice that as you go on with your regular running exercise, your body could take greater distances and endure longer sessions. You are increasing your body’s resistance.

Fourth tip: Monitor your pulse rate. Running and other exercises when done properly could help the heart beat less. This is because the heart is properly trained. When the heart beats slower especially during your relaxed hours (like bedtime or after waking up in the morning) it means the heart is successfully pumping more blood throughout the body in every beat. Perform a simple test. Get your heart beat per minute everyday, immediately after you wake up in the morning. If your pulse rate is higher today than yesterday, it means you are overdoing your exercise. Continue your running program when your heart beat normalizes.

Lastly, listen to your own body. After running, it is normal to feel tired. There could even be tolerable muscle pains. Be alert when you feel dizzy or experience chest pains after the activity. That may mean you have overdone it and you have reached or exceeded your threshold. When such adverse feelings occur, cut back on the training load and immediately seek the opinion of your doctor.

Easy Techniques to Lose 10 Pounds in One Week

Losing extra pounds gradually is the healthiest way to keep in shape. Instead of wanting to shave off those extra pounds in a day or two, which can be a very daunting endeavor, a pound or two each day is a healthier alternative. There are several ways to lose 10 pounds in one week but only a handful of them work. More so, some of those diets even subtly suggest going to extremes like not eating anything at all.

If you are unsure of what kind of diet regimen you should undertake to help you lose weight, here is a one-week meal plan you can try. Just follow these few simple steps and see yourself slimmer in a span of one week.

Day One

On the first day of the diet, it is important to condition the body. You can do this by taking a detox diet. Not only will this help the body lose weight faster but cleanse it as well. Start the day by mixing a cup of lemon juice, slices of ginger and honey with one cup of water.

It is helpful to prepare a mixture of this detox drink that can last the whole day. This way whenever you are hungry, all you have to do is to drink a cup of the detox mixture.

Day Two

It is important to limit the amount of food you eat to help your body lose weight fast. However, don’t forget to eat healthy and incorporate lots of fruits and vegetables to your meals. You can also eat meat but remember to chose lean ones or opt for white meat like chicken or fish instead.

Day Three

Once you got used to your new diet, start adding two pieces of apples and a cup of black beans to your meals. You can also substitute the beans for the meats. This can jumpstart your fiber intake, which in turn helps for healthy weight loss.

Day Four

During the fourth day of the diet, start eating heavy breakfast mostly consisting of grains and cereals. Again, fiber is very important because it really does wonders for the digestive system. As for your dinner, remember to eat the meal before seven o’clock. Eating after seven in the evening or hours before sleep can restrict the body from properly digesting your meal.

Day Five

It is important to realize just how much calorie you consume during the previous three days especially now that you have established a healthy diet. Once you are aware of this, try to scatter your meals all throughout the day. Eating five to six small meals is a great way to help you lose weight.

Day Six

During this time, you must be able to limit your sugar and fat intake. If not, try to limit your consumption further. There are other healthier alternatives for these kinds of foods. For instance, instead of eating ice cream for dessert, eat yogurt. They are healthier and provide the body with helpful and healthy bacteria.

Day Seven

Eat fresh fruits instead of packaged juices. Another healthier alternative is to drink freshly squeezed juices without additives and flavorings. You can even stop drinking juice altogether and rather opt for a healthier green tea.

This kind of diet can be prolonged if you want to continuously lose weight. Once you lose 10 pounds in one week, remember that maintaining this type of healthy diet can prevent you from gaining weight.

Best Guidelines for a 10-Pound Weight Loss

Losing weight, as well all know, can bring tons of benefits most of which are long term. It can help improve the body’s defenses against certain diseases as well as improve the psychological wellbeing. Wishing to shed a few extra pounds isn’t that hard to realize. There are several guidelines for a 10-pound weight loss out there that you can surely utilize for your own advantage. Integrating these tips with your diet and exercise regimen can definitely help you lose weight for a shorter period of time.

Tell Others You Are On a Diet

Making your diet public is a form of affirmation. It is very hard to keep your diet a secret from others and there is not reason for you to do that. Telling others that you are on a diet can really help you in the long run. More people would be able to help you on your mission and you can depend on them more for morale support.

Motivation is the key to a successful diet. You can get this from those around you especially your from your friends and family. If you hear unsupportive comments, just brush them off and think of the positive effects of what you are doing.

Don’t Forget to Drink Lots of Water

Water is obviously very helpful to the body. It can even be more helpful during diets. Water doesn’t only help the body get rid of toxins and functions properly but also eliminate cravings. A sudden change in eating habits can cause unexpected cravings and hunger pangs. Water is very beneficial during these tough times.

A glass of cold water can effectively eliminate any of your cravings even for just a moment. Whenever you feel like eating but it is not time for your meal, grab a glass of water and drink until you feel the cravings melting away.

Purchase a Weighing Scale

You don’t have to buy those large weighing beams that they use on the hospitals. There are several kinds of digital weighing scales available on your local hardware and electronic store. This is an important step in any diet; how else can you monitor your progress if you don’t own a scale? Always remember to choose a brand that is known for its durability and accurateness.

You can either opt for a simple weighing scale that only has the basic ability to tell you how much you weight or something that has extra options like weight logging and comparison programs. The latter type of weighing scale is very helpful in telling you just how you are developing through the diet.

Make a Habit of Weighing Yourself Everyday

Once you bought a weighing scale, place it in your bedroom where you can easily access it after waking up. Most people only weight themselves once a week. Though this method is still effective, weighing yourself everyday can tell your daily progress. This is even more evident if you purchase a weighing scale that is accurate to the last detail. Always remember that a 180.8 is yesterday is different from 180.0. A weighing scale that can’t tell your accurate weight even to the last decimal is less useful.

Losing as low as .8 in your weight is significant because it shows you exactly how your diet is working. Keep in mind that the diet is only as good as its results. Try to find more guidelines for a 10-pound weight loss or be creative and make one. You don’t know how much they can help you achieve your goal.

Tips to Help You Lose 10 Pounds in 6 Weeks

Most of the time, due to inability to commit to a certain diet and exercise regimen, people fail to lose even the slightest significant weight loss in a period of one month. Furthermore, gaining back the lost weight usually occurs if one cannot continue with the commitment to diet. The only solution to this is to increase the time frame for the weight loss journey.

The common cause of failure is work. People who are too busy to lose weight must not commit in the first place lest risking the so-called yo-yo diet. Fortunately, there is a weight loss program that can be easily done by the busiest of people.

Tip No. 1

For your breakfast always opt for one serving of cereal rather than a full English breakfast. The best thing to do when trying to lose weight is to cut the amount of calories you take. A traditional serving of cereal for most people is actually equivalent to two servings. What you should do is to get that measuring cup ready and accurately measure your breakfast cereals: three-fourths to one cup or depending on the label of the cereal.

Tip No. 2

Choose steam and even raw for butter and margarine. Although French cuisine is definitely mouth-watering, butter is an absolute no-no during diets. The same goes for margarine. Steamed vegetables are healthier than those sautéed in butter.

On the other hand, you can still significantly lower your butter and margarine consumption if you cannot completely erase it from your healthy must-eat list. A decrease of one tablespoon of butter everyday can save you more than 4,000 calories, which is enough to help you lose pounds in six weeks.

Tip No. 3

The best way to lose weight is to skip your routine late night snacks. It easier for the body to gain weight at night since the extra calories are stored and turned to fats instead of burnt. Try to limit your nightly snacks to 150 calories and choose those guilt-free dietary snacks.

You can even choose to drink a tea instead of coffee before bed to kill the craving. You would save as much as 11,000 calories in the course of six weeks, which means a three-pound weight loss.

Tip No. 4

It is healthier to eat a sandwich for lunch instead of a full lunch meal. However, make sure that you skip the mayonnaise and cheese on your sandwich. These two packs a lot of calories that require some time to burn. Instead of putting cheese or mayonnaise, opt for mustard, which contains a healthier five calories per teaspoon. If you have the habit of eating a piece of sandwich everyday, you would be able to save up to 8,800 calories – a two and a half pounds weight loss.

Tip No. 5

Always be mindful of the extra calories you consume sometimes unconsciously. Most people don’t realize that the number one contributing factor in weight gain is the habit of taking small bites from others’ meals. For instance, you would surely help your weight loss journey if you eliminate your habit of taking home an extra packet of salad dressing or ketchup from the restaurant or taking a small bite from a friend’s dessert.

These tips are designed to help you create a healthier lifestyle free of unwanted excess calories. These are guidelines that can help you achieve a healthier you. More so, doing all these tips regularly can eventually help you lose 10 pounds in six weeks.

Swine Flu Thousand Cases

A pandemic second quarter of 2009 outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) virus is a new strain of influenza virus identified commonly referred to as Swine Flu confirmed cases topped almost 6,000 individuals, as Belgium became the latest European nation to be hit by the influenza A(H1N1) virus.  World Health Organization (WHO) officials said the number of cases of influenza A(H1N1) stood at around 6,000 and nearly 7,000 in more than 30 countries, with more than 60 people having died from the disease.

Cases were first discovered in the U.S. and officials soon suspected a link between those incidents and an earlier outbreak of late-season flu cases in Mexico.  In less than a week hundreds of suspected cases, some of them serious, were discovered in Mexico.  Soon thereafter, the WHO along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expressed concern that the A(H1N1) could become a worldwide flu pandemic, and WHO then raised its pandemic disease alert level to "Phase 5" out of the six maximum, as a "signal that a pandemic is at about to happen level".

More than three thousand cases of infections including three deaths was the recorded highest number of A(H1N1) by the United States compared to Mexico where only more than two thousand reported cases of infection including 60 deaths were confirmed.  The WHO said 389 people were also confirmed with the virus – and one person had died – in Canada who happens to be with the 19-year-old Chinese career that brings in to China a spread out.  Two other cases have been confirmed in Hong Kong.  Authorities there said they had quarantined six people who traveled with the second case, a 24-year-old man, by plane from San Francisco.  A further 45 people who sat near him on his journey had already left Hong Kong, they said.

China, in the meantime, stepped up the search for people who came into contact with the mainland's two confirmed Swine Flu patients.  A 30-year-old man was confirmed to have the virus in the southwestern city of Chengdu.  He had been in the United States before his homecoming to China.  Plane (Air Canada flight to Beijing) and train (for Shandong Province with 20 people on board) travelers with a 5 meter contact with a 19-year-old student (his surname is Lu: second confirmed victim) are being haunted by Chinese Authorities in Beijing and Eastern Shandong province.

He’s not feeling well, a couple of days after his arrival in Beijing but still continue to travel by train with a fever, sore throat and a headache.  They believed that virus highlighted in China and Hong Kong could be a mix of bird and human flu which came together in pigs.

Belgium confirmed its first case of Swine Flu in a 28-year-old man who also had been in the United States.  Jose Angel Cordova (Health Minister of Mexico) moved to reassure tourists, saying that the country's beaches and resorts – an important source of foreign income -- were safe for visitors.  "There's no risk to tourists," he said, noting that most of the flu cases detected in holiday hotspots like Cancun and Acapulco dated back nearly two weeks.

The Swine Flu outbreak was expected to cost Mexico's economy of more than 2 billion dollars – or about 0.3 percent of gross domestic product.

Signs And Symptoms Of Swine Flu

Most of the human race is now aware of the news outbreak about Swine Flu — but are we aware of the signs and symptoms of swine flu? We already know how to prevent but the signs and symptoms is still a puzzle in our mind.  Well, through this article, I will give you insights if you are now a victim of Swine Flu virus.

But before, we proceed let me introduce to you first about Swine Flu.  The 3-10% of the global population estimated to affect the yearly influenza epidemics that can be a result in severe illness in 3–4 million patients and causing 200,000–400,000 deaths worldwide.  Severe illness and deaths occur mainly in the high-risk populations of infants, the elderly, pregnant women and chronically ill patients in industrialized nations.

In addition to these yearly epidemics, the influenza A virus has caused three major global pandemics during the 20th century: there was the Spanish flu in 1918, the Asian flu in 1957 and in 1968–69 was the Hong Kong flu. These pandemics were caused by an Influenza A virus that had undergone major genetic changes, due to which the population did not possess significant immunity.

In pigs influenza infection produces lethargy, sneezing, fever, coughing, difficulty breathing and decreased appetite.  In some cases especially the pregnant women, the infection can cause abortion.  Although mortality is usually low (around 1-3%), the virus can produce weight loss and poor growth, causing economic loss to farmers.  Infected pigs can lose up to 10 pounds of body weight over a 2 to 3 week period.

Main symptoms of swine flu in humans can be a direct transmission of a swine flu virus from pigs to humans is occasionally possible (called zoonotic swine flu). Under phase one, an animal outbreak of flu symptoms in your hog race backyard.

In phase two considered when the owner within the hog race backyard got infected with a flu from their animal symptoms.

Phase 3 reviewed when a child within the hog race backyard got infected together with his father, his mother and his siblings. The fourth phase, there is a cause of community-level outbreaks of human-to-human transmission of an animal or human-animal flu virus.  This phase will focus to contain the spreading of the virus.

Countries will be informed asking to advice their people such as traveling to containment areas.  All countries with infected with the swine flu must also consider in deploying a pandemic vaccine.  (e.g. when the infected family member went out from their backyard decided to talk to his friends and unaware that he’s spreading the virus.)

Second to the last phase, when a man-infected virus either a family member or any of his friends travel to another neighboring country.  You will know if there your country is in a phase 5 dominant when there is an announcement suspension of classes because of flu spread out.

This final and a pandemic phase is just like when an unaware man-infected virus travel to another continent unaware that he spread out the Swine Flu virus to another races.  Now with the above mentioned signs and symptoms, you are now ready to plan and prepare immediately of the possible attacks of the Swine Flu virus.  Consult to different agencies that concerns with the Swine Flu pandemics.

In Dire Need of Swine Flu Vaccine

According to the World Health Organization, efforts for developing a swine flu vaccine has been ongoing since the first human case of the virus has been confirmed. Estimates place the initial doses of the vaccine will be administered in 5 to 6 months time.

While people diagnosed with H1N1 virus seems to be headed for recovery, there have been deaths recorded. Aside from that, receiving vaccines for this virus is important particularly the elderly and individuals with a weak immune system, since they are prone to complications such as pneumonia.

Likewise, the vaccine will serve as protection in case the condition persists particularly during the winter months which is the time when influenza is at its peak.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), although they are still incomplete, current evidence shows that seasonal influenza vaccines will provide minimal or no protection against swine flu. Every year, a new batch of flu vaccine is developed and matched with strains that the WHO determines will most probably circulate in the winter months, which happens to be the peak season for influenza outbreaks.

Influenza virus comes in various strains which contains different proteins on their surfaces. The body's immune system can only fight and destroy a virus if they are able to recognize these proteins. It is worth noting that antibodies that recognize one strain may not detect other strains.
Existing vaccines may only offer some protection against swine influenza if the proteins on its surface are identical to strains used to develop previous vaccines. According to the NIBSC, they are trying to determine if the swine flu virus, which is an H1N1 strain of type A influenza, as well as previous H1N1 vaccines match current vaccines.

The preparation of a vaccine commences after a virus develops as they provide the starting point for the production of the vaccine. As such, there is always a time delay while a vaccine is being developed. Preparation of a vaccine involves several steps so it would take several months before a vaccine becomes available.

According to WHO estimates, the virus needed for producing the vaccine will be accessible to vaccine manufacturers by the middle of May while the initial dose for a new vaccine would be ready within 5 to 6 months after that. Waiting time would be much longer if the growth of the vaccine proceeds rapidly.

Vaccination plays a crucial role in the prevention and reduction of the effects of serious conditions. Unfortunately, they are not entirely effective and could lose its effectiveness if the virus mutates.
Existing flu vaccines are valid for about one year and are 70% - 80% effective against transmission with strains of influenza virus that are identical to strains used in the production of vaccines.

The WHO believes that it is too early to tell how the A(H1N1) virus would change. It is closely monitoring any changes in the virus and this would help countries quickly react to any important changes that the virus may show.

Vaccines help the body combat certain diseases in case an individual becomes afflicted with the illness in the future. On the other hand, an antiviral drug is used on people who is already infected with a virus. Although they work in various ways, they generally work to prevent the virus from spreading to different cells in the body.

Swine flu vaccines are administered prior to exposure to a virus so they would be protected from that agent. Antivirals only work if administered within a certain period of time before or after they are exposed to the virus.

H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu)

Responsible for binding the virus to host cells is called the HA (hemagglutinin) peplomer while the virus that allows to break its bonds to the host cell once it is ready to move on is called the NA (neuraminidase) peplomer.  This type is also called H1N1 Flu or well-known as Swine Flu.  Swine flu is a type of virus infected from pigs.  Humans do not normally get swine flu, but human infections can and do happen.

But, randomly, the human race got infected with Swine flu.  Most frequently, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (example: owner and or workers in the swine backyard or industry or even the children near pigs at a fair).

The virus is contagious and can spread from human to human.  Symptoms of swine flu in people are similar to the symptoms of regular human flu such as cough, fever, body aches, sore throat, chills, fatigue and headache.
Swine Flu is a respiratory track infection from the hogs.  This kind of virus can kill the human race just like what happen to a pregnant woman and another individual in Texas with also reported death in Washington.  This infection is a worldwide virus outbreak that started in Mexico and eventually spread from one country to another continent including China.

A flu deadly disease occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which people have little or no immunity at all and those whom their hospitals are more than 10 to 20 miles from their community can easily infected with the Swine Flu.  The transmission of human to human of Swine flu can also be done.

This is thought to happen in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus to an uninfected individual will be infected also.  People may also become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then they touch their mouth or nose.  The disease spreads easily by human to human transmission and can be cause with serious sickness, and can spread to other individuals in your community, spread out across the country and even worldwide in a very short period of time.

A big NO-NO to some individuals who think that swine flu can also get from foods we eat.  Take note that influenza viruses cannot be transmitted by food by means of eating pork or pork products.  Eating properly handled and properly cooked pork is safe.

Swine Flu can be monitor if you consult to your health officer directly if you are not feeling well for more than 24 hours especially if you have a hog race industry in your backyard.  They will advice you on how to plan, prepare and prevent the Swine Flu virus that spread out worldwide.

An Introduction To Swine Flu

Swine Flu-Is a respiratory track infection from the hogs.  This kind of virus can kill the human race.  This infection is a worldwide virus outbreak.  A flu deadly disease occurs when a new influenza virus emerges for which people have little or no immunity and for which there is no vaccine.  Those whom their hospitals are more than 10 miles from their community can easily infected with the Swine Flu.

The disease spreads easily person-to-person, and can be cause with serious illness, and can spread out across the country and even worldwide in a very short span of time.  An influenza pandemic may be caused by either swine (pig) or avian (bird) flu viruses.

Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans.  But, randomly, the human race got infected with Swine flu.  Most frequently, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs (example: owner and or workers in the swine backyard or industry or even the children near pigs at a fair).

Human-to-human transmission of Swine flu can also occur.  This is thought to happen in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the influenza virus to an uninfected individual will be infected also.  People may also become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then they touch their mouth or nose.

Some think that swine flu can also get from foods we eat.  Take note that influenza viruses are not transmitted by food.  You cannot get the influenza virus by means of eating pork or pork products.  Eating properly handled and cooked pork is safe.  Proper cooking of pork or pork products with an internal temperature of 160°F will kill the swine flu virus as it does with other bacteria and viruses.

Fever, lethargy, lack of appetite, runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and coughing are some of the following symptoms of swine flu in people.

In diagnosing influenza infection, a respiratory specimen would generally need to be collected within the first 3 to 4 days of illness (when an infected person is most likely to be contagious).  However, some persons, especially children, may be infectious for 10 days or longer.

If you get sick, there are two antiviral drugs (Tamiflu and Relenza) available with prescription can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster.  They may also prevent serious influenza complications.  In treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started as soon after getting sick as possible, and might not work if started more than 2 days after illness starts.

There are a number of things that you can do to prepare yourself and those around you for a flu pandemic.  It is important to think about the challenges that you might face, particularly if an epidemic is rigorous.

The effects of a pandemic can be lessened if preparation is made ahead of time.  Planning and preparation information and checklists are being prepared for various sectors of society, including information for individuals and families.

Different agencies are providing funding, advice, and other support from different rich nations to every country to assist with Swine Flu epidemic planning and preparation.  Reading articles like this can help you plan against the spreading of the Swine Flu.

How To Live A Healthy Life With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Imagine a lifetime of sickness, of perpetual headaches and of endless flu-like illness. Imagine being unable to walk from your bed to the couch because of too much exhaustion. Imagine being locked up in your house, unable to go to work to earn a living. Well, that sums up life for most sufferers of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or CFS is a disorder both of the mind and the body. Apart from the symptoms mentioned above, CFS also afflicts the immune system which makes an individual become very sickly. It also affects one's threshold to physical activities, thus making an individual feel worn out 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Further, it limits a person to very minimal activities which make him incapable of holding a job.

With these realities, it is hard to imagine how one can live a normal, healthy life while suffering from chronic fatigue. But can a normal life materialize if you are continuously bothered by the symptoms of this disease? Most likely yes. Below are some of the things that one can do to limit the negative effects of the disease on yourself and on your life.

Remove the diets that spell disaster - It is easy to sabotage one's health these days by just following the average American's sense of food proportions, by consuming too much processed foods and by eating too many flour- and sugar-based foods. Sugar is notorious for killing the diets of Americans and so are flour, transfat, processed foods, etc. These types of foods are accounted for numerous diseases that upset health.

Herbal Regimen For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients

Chronic fatigue syndrome is one of the more enigmatic disorders today. Characterized by conditions of extreme exhaustion lasting for a prolonged period of time, chronic fatigue syndrome also comes with several other symptoms such as muscle and joint pains, tenderness of the lymph nodes, recurring sore throat, impaired short memory, and severe headache. The underlying causes of this debilitating disease are not yet known.

Researchers have theorized that CFS might be caused by viral infections. This is supported by the fact that CFS and symptoms of flu are quite similar. However, rest and medication can relieve flu. Unfortunately, there is no known cure yet for chronic fatigue syndrome. Treatments and medications for CFS are mostly aimed at relieving the various symptoms that accompany a CFS attack. Doctors use a combination of non-drug therapies and medications to treat the symptoms of CFS.

Many doctors advocate the use of natural and herbal remedies to treat CFS. Herbal medicines have been used for centuries to treat various diseases. An herbal regimen for chronic fatigue syndrome may include tonics to help boost the immune system, increase the body's energy level, improve digestive efficiency and restore strength to the muscles. Foods that help the body increase its absorption of minerals are also recommended. There are also deep immune tonics that strengthen the body's supply of bone marrow and replenish the immune reserves.

Adrenal tonics and adaptogens also help boost the adrenal glands to enhance the body's energy level and fight off stress. Antiviral herbs can be used to combat opportunistic viral infections, especially when combined with immune and adrenal strengthening herbs. Herbs can also be used to relax the nervous system and improve sleep. Some herbs have been used for ages to soothe frazzled nerves and combat stress. Here are some herbs that can be used to treat symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome:

• Dang Gui – This herb is a small, aromatic, fern-leafed plant native to China and related to the parsley family is best known for its blood strengthening properties. It revitalizes the blood and is also known to boost the health of the uterus and other female generative organs. Dan Gui is used to treat anemia, irregular menstruation, and for treating the symptoms of PMS and menopause. Dang Gui can be taken in various forms:  tincture, capsule, tablet, powder and bulk herb.

• Gentian – This is a bitter tonic that acts as a digestive stimulant. It is usually taken15-30 minutes before meals and is typically combined with other herbs. Studies have reveled that gentian has immune-strengthening properties. It is usually given to patients to help in the absorption and assimilation of nutrients, enhancement of energy levels and improvement of immune function.

• Ligustrum – This herb can be used as a deep immune tonic to strengthen the immune system and fight off the harmful effects of overwork and stress. It is also used to nourish the liver and the adrenal glands and as a treatment for nausea, low back pain and palpitations. Ligustrum is even used in cancer treatments because of its potency.

• Siberian Ginseng – This herb has immune-regulating and adaptogenic properties. This makes Siberian ginseng a good treatment for fatigue, exhaustion, immune deficiency and other stress-related disorders. As an adaptogen, Siberian ginseng helps patients adapt to stress. This herb is also helpful in treating chronic inflammatory conditions. Taking Siberian ginseng also helps increase energy levels.

Exercise And Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome or CFS is a disorder characterized by extreme and prolonged exhaustion combined with several other symptoms such as muscle and joint pains, headache, sore throat and other flu-like symptoms. The exact cause of chronic fatigue syndrome is yet to be discovered and it may take years before the individual can recover from the ailment.

Sometimes, the CFS victims suffer recurring bouts with CFS through their lifetime. Because the exact cause of CFS is yet to be determined, there is no known cure for this illness yet.  Non-drug treatments and medications are primarily to relieve the many symptoms of CFS.

One of the non-drug therapies put forward by doctors, as a treatment for CFS, is exercise. However. Medical opinion is still divided on whether exercise can actually help improve or worsen the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. Some doctors believe that mild exercise can be helpful in overcoming CFS. Others warn against any form of aerobic activity that can aggravate CFS.

Exercise can be a problem for people with chronic fatigue syndrome because strenuous physical activity can worsen the symptoms of CFS such as muscle pain, fatigue and tenderness of the joints. While exercise is important in maintaining health and wellness, it can become dangerous for people with chronic fatigue. But a recent study released by the British Medical Journal has revealed that proper patient education on chronic fatigue syndrome combined with a supervised exercise program can help improve the symptoms of CFS.

Still, people with CFS typically find it difficult to perform basic activities such as walking let alone do rigorous physical activities such as aerobic exercise. During an onset of chronic fatigue, the patient may be bedridden. They usually feel better after some time and may attempt to do regular exercise. However there is danger that the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome may relapse once the individual attempts aerobic activity.

Muscular activity causes lactic acid to be produced in the muscles. This chemical by-product leads to fatigue. Research says that exercise can worsen the effects of chronic fatigue syndrome because it sets off production of excess lactic acid in the muscles. Recent studies reveal that people with CFS actually produce twice the amount of lactic acid than people without chronic fatigue syndrome. Researches believe that their findings suggest a link between chronic fatigue syndrome and an error in the body's energy metabolism.

Researchers are also looking at a link between chronic fatigue and low levels of potassium electrolytes. A deficiency in potassium supply usually causes chronic fatigue. The bulk of the body's potassium supply is in the muscle tissue as well as the brain, blood and internal organs. Studies have revealed that people with chronic fatigue syndrome have actually less total body potassium compared to healthy people of the same weight and age.

On the other hand, a sedentary lifestyle can also cause a whole range of health problems for people with CFS. These include loss of bone mass, muscle wastage or atrophy, and increased vulnerability to obesity and cardiovascular disease.  People with chronic fatigue syndrome should have a gentle approach to physical activity.

There should only be minute increases in the frequency, intensity and duration of the exercise program to prevent any detrimental effects to the health and well-being of the chronic fatigue syndrome patient.

Overview of Usual Psoriasis Treatments

Nobody wants to have psoriasis. But you could not help developing it, if it runs in your family. The only consolation you may have is that the skin disorder currently has more options for treatment compared to all other skin diseases. Treatment could be applied externally or internally, depending on your choice and the need of your body. Physical treatments are also not ruled out. Whatever psoriasis treatment you choose, you could expect to get relief and freedom from the disease.

Because there are just too many psoriasis treatments available, you may have a hard or long time determining which works best. The ideal thing to do is to conduct a trial and error. The logistics could be daunting at most times. But you surely could expect drastic clearing of the skin with correct application or intake of treatment over time.

Topical treatments for psoriasis

When you say topical, it means applied externally or to the surface of the affected skin area. Topical treatments include ointments, oils, creams, foams, lotions, and tapes. Such preparations could be bought by prescription or over-the-counter. In this regard, treating any part of the body affected by the disorder is possible.

In general, topical treatments for psoriasis are recommended to sufferers whose psoriasis is affecting less than 10% of the entire skin all over the body. If psoriasis is more severe, if it affects more than 10% of the skin, or if topical medications falter, systemic treatments are advised. Topical treatments may be daunting to some, particularly because many lotions and creams tend to be sticky and messy.

Systemic treatments for psoriasis

Systemic treatments are generally medications that are not only aimed at treating psoriasis. Usually, they are medications that also treat other conditions all throughout the body. Who would not want to get one shot as treatment to all pain, diseases, and unlikely conditions in the body? In the case of this skin disorder, systemic treatments include injections and pills.

The now popular injectable biologics are systemic treatments for psoriasis. Though still new in the market, demand for such a medication is very high because it has been identified to curtail moderate to severe types of the skin condition. Even with just two injections in a month, psoriasis sufferers could be effectively disease-free. What’s more? Such injections could be administered right at the comfort of home. However, like all other medications, injection biologics are not without a few side-effects. Constant and regular monitoring by a physician is required.

Physical treatments

As mentioned, there are physical treatments available. Phototherapy is most effective as a physical treatment. The procedure involved ultraviolet light. Artificial light is often utilized to facilitate this treatment. There is a procedure wherein a sun-sensitizing pill is ingested first before exposure to special light. Newer light treatments are available.

Heliotherapy is becoming popular because it uses natural sunlight as a good light source of ultraviolet radiation. Logically, ultraviolet rays are good in treating and controlling psoriasis flares. It is not surprising that it is used to bring about treatment. However, take note that light treatment is not advisable and not appropriate for all sufferers.

You could choose any psoriasis treatment from the abovementioned treatments. When undergoing medications, just like in other diseases, it is important to do procedures properly, on time, and as prescribed. Otherwise, the effort and the costs would only drain to futility.

Identifying The Symptoms of Psoriasis

Identifying the symptoms of psoriasis involves checking characteristic skin changes which in most cases have a preference for certain parts of the body. The usual symptoms of the condition include thickness of the skin, scaling, and redness. The condition does not only affect the skin but also the nails, scalp, and joints as well. Each type of psoriasis has their own symptoms.

Psoriasis vulgaris, or plaque-type psoriasis is the most common form of the condition. The three common symptoms of this condition include thickening, redness, and scales in the skin. The thickening of the skin usually ranges from barely perceptible to about several millimeters thick. Its color may range from being faint pink to deep beefy red.

For patients with darker skin, there may be reduced redness and greater darkening. Skin scales may vary from being non-existent to having the presence of thick oyster-shell like plates called ostraceous scales. When these scales are scraped or removed, a condition known as Auspitz’s sign can take place. The targeted areas may include the top of tiny capillaries which can result to vertical undulation all over the thickened skin.

Another common symptom of the condition is called the Koebner Phenomenon takes place when there is a new area of the condition developing in the injured skin. After undergoing surgery, the condition can develop around the scars brought about by surgery. The Koebner Phenomenon also provides an explanation why the condition takes place on areas where the trauma is consistently of low intensity, such as in the elbows and knees.

Aside from that, the Koebner Phenomenon can take place after non-traumatic skin injuries, such as sunburn or an allergies resulting from a medication. If the patient is suffering from dandruff o seborrheic dermatitis of the face or scalp, the condition has the tendency to superimpose itself as a result of irritation and scratching. It can also lead to the development of combination dermatitis called “sebopsoriasis.” However, the Koebner Phenomenon is not specific to psoriasis.

Guttate, Pustular, Erythrodermic psoriasis, the less common types of the condition, is considerably different from plaque psoriasis. The common symptom of guttate psoriasis includes tiny papules, which are lesions that can be felt and has a diameter of less than a centimeter and seems to be sprinkled all over the skin.

The pustular type takes place in smaller areas of the skin or in major parts of the body where innumerable tiny white pustules can be seen. The eythrodermic type involves reddening and presence of scales in the entire body. If this happens, skin biopsy may be required to separate the condition from other diseases involving reddening and scaling of the skin.

Plaque-type psoriasis usually takes place in certain parts of the body such as the scalp, knees, elbows, belly button, genitals, and buttocks. In the armpits as well as other damp areas of the body, such as the breasts or groin, the scales become wet and pasty. The lesions become moist and develop a red and raw appearance. On the scalp, a severe form of dandruff-like flaking and scaling is evident.

Identifying the symptoms of psoriasis plays a crucial role in determining diagnosis and treatment. People who suspect that they are suffering from psoriasis should immediately consult their doctor so proper treatment can be administered. Likewise, the symptoms can vary from one person to another.

Eating Well To Effectively Manage Diabetes

Diabetes or not, eating healthy food is recommended for everyone. However, if you have diabetes, you need to remember that eating healthy food is not just a requirement, but it should be part of your everyday life. Living with diabetes is hard. You need to drastically change the way you live your life especially when it comes to your diet.

There is basically no need to prepare separate meals for people with diabetes and for people who are not suffering from this disease as the diabetic diet is recommended for everyone. Healthy eating can be enjoyed by the whole family.

Having a healthy eating plan is recommended for all people suffering from diabetes. But, for people suffering from type 1 diabetes, special considerations should be taken. You have to remember that people with type 1 diabetes requires matching the amount of insulin they take to the carbohydrates in the food they eat.

This is why it is highly advisable for people with type 1 diabetes to consult a dietician who is experienced in working with people with type 1 diabetes to help them prepare a healthy and suitable meal plan that they can work with.

Eating regularly is important for people suffering from diabetes. Instead of eating three large meals a day, it is important to spread it evenly throughout the day. Or, you have to have three meals a day and a snack after each meal.

Generally speaking, the diabetic diet should be low in fat, sugar, salt, and carbohydrates. Also, the diet should be high in vegetables, whole grains, and fruits.

If you regularly exercise, it is very important that you should match the amount of food you eat to the amount you burn each day. You shouldn’t put too much fuel in your body that you won't burn. This is very important in order to get the right balance of blood glucose level in your body.

If you go out for a walk, always bring with you a snack bag. Always have something sweet with you, such as sodas, and hard candies. This will help you if you feel that you are experiencing hypoglycemia setting in.

Never skip meals if you are diabetic. This will wreak havoc in your blood glucose levels and can result in potentially dangerous complications, such as hypoglycemia or low blood sugar levels. The worst thing that can happen to you if you skip meals and experience hypoglycemia is diabetic coma. This is one symptom that you don’t want to experience and this is also a symptom that can be life threatening.

Alcohol intake is possible if you are diabetic. But, try to limit it to one glass of wine a day or one bottle of beer a day. Also, try to have at least two alcohol-free days every week. If you are trying to lose weight, forget about beer. Instead, try whiskey as this doesn’t contain any alcohol.

Also, it is best to drink alcoholic beverages with a meal or some food that contains carbohydrate.

These are the things that you have to remember as a diabetic. By following a strict diabetic diet, you can be sure that you will be able to properly and effectively manage diabetes. With these tips, living with diabetes will be a lot easier in your part.

Top Natural Remedies for Arthritis

By Michael N Martin

A Conditioned Society
It's a shame, but the majority of us are so conditioned into believing that the health care system has all the answers and if they allegedly have no cure or effective treatment, then it doesn't exist. Because of this, few people bother searching for natural remedies for arthritis. However, people's awareness is on the rise.

Whether you want to believe it, the health care and drug industries in North America, are massive moneymaking giants.

It's obvious to me, that a life-long treatment can produce far more income than a cure. Did you know that in 2010 the largest drug companies in North America pulled in a combined 47 trillion dollars off chronic disease alone?

With fact such as this one publicly available, the world's population is becoming more and more educated as to the real state of our society.

Easy Natural Remedies for Arthritis
Good natural remedies for arthritis need to accomplish at least one of these things:

  • Reduce Inflammation/ ease arthritis pain
  • Recover joint tissue, or prevent its loss
  • Prevent arthritis from forming in other joints
  • Or fight the theoretical causes of arthritis

Luckily for us, there are quite a few remedies that accomplish one of these desired effects, some can even accomplish more than one or even all of them.

One of the most commonly used remedies for arthritis, is fish oil. It's also one of my favorite because it is so easy to use and it has a ton of other amazing health benefits. Why is fish oil a natural remedy for arthritis? It's because fish oil is the best source of the fatty acid omega3.

There are two main components of omega3. One is EPA and the other is DHA. DHA is known to be the brain food of the two, while EPA in known to be the stronger anti-inflammatory.

How is omega3 a strong anti-inflammatory? When omega3 is consumed in the recommended amount, it has the ability to suppress the expression of COX-2.

What is COX-2? It is an inflammation creating substance within the body that Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs, (NSAID), goal is to inhibit. NSAID do this, but at the price of also inhibiting COX-1 production. This COX-1 suppression effect that NSAID have, can cause a few unwanted side effects. Fortunately, omega3 achieves the suppression of COX-2, but with no side effects and a whole ton of positive health benefits.

Fish Oil Usage
Fish oil can be easily added into your diet by simply consuming a teaspoon (5mL) with two meals of the day; preferably breakfast and dinner. Because fish oil is healthy and side effect free, you can increase the dosage if 10mL a day isn't sufficient.

Because of the quantities of fish oil needed, it is best to buy it in a liquid form and not a capsule. If you find the taste or smell is undesirable, there are quite a few brands that supply unscented fish oil.

Psoriatic Arthritis - More Than Just Joint Pain

By Riley Hendersen

What could be worse that this awful joint pain and stiffness, you wonder as you try to will yourself out of bed. While the pain and fatigue that goes along with rheumatoid arthritis can be excruciating and is without a doubt a possibly debilitating condition, there is actually a form of arthritis that is worse. Psoriatic arthritis is a form of the disease that affects not only the joints, but also the skin, and possibly the tendons, eyes, spine, heart and lungs.

In most people who suffer from psoriatic arthritis, the first sign that something is wrong is the inflammation of the skin. Patients can develop psoriasis on their elbows, knees, scalp, and area around the navel and around the anus or genitals. Psoriasis causes red, raised areas of scaly skin. The signs of the skin disease are first seen in the forties or fifties and generally precede joint pain by several months to years. Once the joint pain starts, it generally involves the joints in the feet, ankles and knees. Inflammation can cause the joints to become red, hot and swollen. Often toes and fingers swell so badly they can resemble sausages. Psoriatic arthritis can also affect the spine.

In addition to skin inflammation and joint pain, psoriatic arthritis also attacks the ligaments and tendons of the body. One of the most common tendons to become affected it the Achilles tendon. This Achilles tendonitis causes the patient to have pain when walking and when climbing steps. Along with affecting the tendons in the heels, the arthritis can also inflame the chest wall and the cartilage that links the breast bone and ribs. This inflammation can cause chest pain and shortness of breath.

Along with the joints and tendons, psoriatic arthritis can also affect the major organs of the body such as the heart and lungs. The lungs can become inflamed causing both shortness of breath and chest pain, especially with deep breathing. If the heart becomes inflamed by the disease, the aortic valve can leak. This leak could result in breathing trouble as well as heart failure.

In its rampage on the body, psoriatic arthritis can also damage the eyes. Redness and itching are common results of the condition. The iris or colored area of the eye can also become painfully inflamed, especially when exposed to bright light. Often the only way to relieve this irisitis is to inject cortisone directly into the eye.

Psoriatic arthritis can often be difficult to diagnose especially in the early stages. One common symptom of this form of arthritis, however, is the pitting of finger or toe nails. Sometimes the disorder can cause the nails to turn loose and fall off completely.

Like rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis results from the body's own immune system turning against itself. Unlike the rheumatoid variety, however, psoriatic arthritis can affect not only the joints, but also the skin, eyes and many of the major organs of the body. Left untreated this disease can progress until it become debilitating and sometimes even life threatening.

Diabetes: The Basics of Proper Management of the Disease

Even though diabetes has been around for many years, there are still quite a lot of people who knows little about it. If you have diabetes, it is important that you know how to properly manage the disease in order to prevent or at least minimize the complications brought upon by the disease. Living with diabetes is not easy but with discipline and with the right knowledge, you can be sure that you will find it easy to adjust and still live a normal and full life.

First of all, you need to know what exactly diabetes is. Basically, this is a condition of the body where it doesn’t make enough insulin or doesn’t use insulin the right way. Insulin is responsible for converting blood sugar or glucose in to energy. Diabetes is a condition where it causes sugar to build up in the blood.

There are two types of diabetes. Type 1 and type 2. If you have type 1 diabetes, it means that your body is unable or only produces little insulin. If you have type 2 diabetes, it means that the insulin produced by your body isn't properly used by the body or it doesn’t produce enough insulin in order to control blood sugar level. Most adults who have diabetes suffer from type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes can cause a lot of health problems. Basically, the disease itself is not the one that you should watch out for. But, you have to look out for the complications brought upon by diabetes, which are blindness, kidney damage, nerve damage, and high risk of heart disease.

When treating diabetes, the main goal should be keeping your blood sugar level as close to normal as possible. It shouldn’t be too high or too low in order for you to minimize or prevent complications caused by the disease.

To do this, you need to have a healthy diet and exercise. What this means is that you will need to change your diet and exercise habits. For some people, it may even mean changing their lifestyle. You also need to watch your weight in order to regulate your blood sugar level.

It is important that you should consult your doctor about your condition in order for you to know more about it and also have knowledge on how to treat it. The doctor will tell you about the foods you need to eat, and also how much exercise you need to have each week.

When it comes to diet, the general rule for diabetics is low fat, low salt, low sugar, low carbohydrates, and high fiber diet. Snack in between meals is also recommended in order to regulate blood sugar levels in the body.

Another important factor in controlling blood sugar levels is by regularly checking your blood glucose levels several times each day. You will need to have a glucose meter in order for you to do so.

In some cases, diet and exercise alone are not enough in order to regulate blood sugar levels. The doctor will usually talk to you about other treatments for diabetes, such as medicine and insulin.

These are the basics of proper management of diabetes. Living with diabetes can be hard at first but with discipline and in time, you will be able to get used to a new lifestyle and continue on living a healthy, normal and full life.
