Side by side an unusual tandem bicycle was patented on December 19, 1979 by Robert C. Barrett of California. The machine would no doubt give the riders a strong sense of togetherness, but, as the inventor realized, 'the steering is preferably arranged to be done by one rider only with the other rider being given handlebars of a non rotatable nature.' The same would apply to the brakes. (Image of the bicycle is not an original one)
